Where does the blood go?
Info
How long does it take to donate blood?
The blood collection process takes approximately 7 to 10 minutes. We recommend booking an appointment in advance to avoid delays.
A full fast is not required. During the four hours prior to donating, you should drink plenty of fluids—excluding dairy. You may have tea, coffee, mate, juice or soft drinks. You may also eat fruit.
This depends on which vaccine you received, as different vaccines require different waiting periods—generally just a few days. We always recommend consulting the National Blood Service for guidance.
Can I donate if I smoke?
Yes, however, it is not advisable to smoke just before or immediately after donating blood.
Can I catch anything from donating blood?
There is absolutely no risk of infection. At the National Blood Service, we are taking every precaution to ensure donors are not exposed to any danger during the process.
Because it saves lives. Every donation helps patients in urgent need. It's a small act that creates a lasting impact — and it reflects the values we believe in: compassion, action, and community.
